Man Made a fatal mistake during training (4 photos + 1 video)

A 55-year-old weightlifting enthusiast suffered a fatal injury at a gym. The barbell slipped from Ronald Montenegro's hands and landed on his chest. Video of the accident was published online.





The man managed to drop the barbell and even get up, but collapsed moments later. Gym staff and patrons can be seen rushing to his aid.

The father of two died at a medical center. The tragedy occurred on December 1 at a gym in the city of Olinda on Brazil's northeastern Atlantic coast.

Montenegro directed a renowned museum housing enormous papier-mâché and fabric puppets. They stand up to 4.5 meters tall and weigh up to 45 kilograms. These puppets are an important part of the vibrant February Carnival.

The museum's website, alongside a photograph of the man, reads: "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Montenegro, our president and an indispensable figure in the history and construction of the Palacio dos Bonecos. Today, we have lost not only a friend and creator, but also a passionate defender of popular culture. He was one of those responsible for preserving the tradition of creating giant puppets that enchanted Olinda and the world. His dedication, vision, and love for Carnival will be remembered for generations to come." Out of respect for his memory and as a sign of mourning, we inform you that our activities have been suspended and will resume as usual on December 5th."

The giant puppets at the Olinda Carnival first appeared in 1932. They often depict celebrities in a caricature style. The oldest of them has special significance for followers of Afro-Brazilian beliefs.



Police have concluded that it was an accident.

The sports club's management also expressed condolences to the family: "The team immediately responded to the incident, seeking specialized assistance. We received the news of his passing with great sadness. We express our sincere condolences to his family and friends, wishing them strength and comfort. Ronald José Salvador will be remembered with warmth and respect by all who were part of his journey in our community. We are ready to provide the necessary support to his loved ones and any assistance we can during this difficult time."





A relative, who asked not to be named, told Brazilian media: "It was an exercise that required a coach." In the footage, Ronald appears to be doing fine; he even warms up and exercises his arms before lifting the barbell. However, when he attempts a set, the barbell slips."

"Gyms need to address this issue. Coaches should not allow students to perform exercises on their own, even if they know the technique."



In September 2023, a 27-year-old man died in China. During training, his neck became pinned between a barbell weighing over 100 kg and a bench.
