Los Angeles television anchors reported live on a carjacking on the evening of October 20th. The 30-minute chase, filmed from a helicopter, was broadcast on KCBS-TV. The suspect abandoned the van in the Mount Washington neighborhood, jumped a guardrail on the 110 Freeway, and was struck by a car driving in the opposite direction.
"Oh my God! Oh no! Oh no!" exclaims anchor Juan Fernandez in surprise.
His colleague Susie Su maintained her composure and addressed the audience: "We just saw a man exit the car being pursued, but he was immediately hit by another car traveling at high speed."
Police confirmed that the suspect died at the scene. The county medical examiner has not yet been able to identify him. The man, who was in his 30s, was hit by two cars.
Los Angeles police officers began pursuing the suspect downtown around 8:30 PM. The driver of the stolen van refused to stop when ordered to do so by an officer. He eventually drove onto the freeway, where he died.
Animal control also arrived at the scene and removed the dog from the vehicle.
