An Indian yogi brought himself to a terrible thrombosis, but God never came to him
A new contender for the "Most Stubborn and Pointless Performance of the Century" award has emerged in India.
A local Zen seeker named Daulat Giri Ji Maharaj decided that standard methods of enlightenment like yoga or incense are for weaklings. To be guaranteed to reach the god Shiva, the man took the vow of "Khadi Tapasya" and simply decided to just stand. According to various reports, he has been standing like this for anywhere from 5 to 12 years, flatly refusing to sit down even for a minute.
Naturally, the laws of physics and biology couldn't care less about the ascetic's lofty spiritual tenets. Due to his round-the-clock vertical position, the blood in Daulat's body rushed straight down and clearly has no plans of returning. As a result, the "saint's" legs have turned into two horrific, shapeless logs, swollen from severe thrombosis and edema.
While Maharaj himself diligently gazes into the astral realm, a crowd of disciples and volunteers keeps watch around his long-suffering legs around the clock. They continuously smear his deformed skin with healing herbs, antiseptics, and ointments. The guys have no easy task: making sure their guru doesn't develop plain old gangrene right in the middle of another session connecting with the cosmos.
Sleeping while standing is a special kind of masochism that Daulat has mastered to perfection. To avoid falling face-first into the dirt during his night's rest, the clever yogi constructed a special suspended swing-bar. He leans on it with his chest or armpits and remains in this semi-suspended state until morning. But the main rule is sacredly observed: his feet must not leave the ground, otherwise Shiva will void all the previous years of suffering.
The irony of fate is that the man of the hour hasn't actually met Shiva in all his years of standing. Apparently, the Hindu god has more important things to do than visit a guy who voluntarily destroys his own blood vessels. However, Daulat isn't discouraged and gives journalists cheerful comments along the lines of "divine insight is near, stay tuned." The oddball has no plans to give up and sit in a chair, continuing to delight pilgrims and rack up likes on social media.
