A serious safety violation at a small zoo in the Chinese city of Shantou nearly resulted in the death of a child. On February 28, one of the keepers, ignoring all official regulations, allowed a group of visitors to get close to the lions and hand-feed them.
The 10-year-old girl is fine. After a hospital examination, she was released home.
The keeper has been suspended. The zoo has been temporarily closed, and its management faces a substantial fine.
